Understanding God’s Purpose for Family
Understanding God’s Purpose for Family
God began the creation of the human race with a family. According to the Bible, Adam and Eve were the first man and woman He created. From this first couple, the entire human race descended. They had two sons, Cain and Abel, whose story reflects the early dynamics of human relationships. Tragically, Cain killed Abel out of envy, Abel was favored by God for his righteous offerings. This act of unkindness brought a curse upon Cain, made him a vagabond and wanderer on earth.
Genesis 4:8-12
8 Now Cain [a]talked with Abel his [b]brother, and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond, you shall be on the earth.”
Sin entered humanity through Adam and Eve’s disobedience when they ate the forbidden fruit God had commanded them not to eat. This disobedience led to their expulsion from God’s presence and introduced sin into the world. From this, sin spread through the entire human race, deeply impacting the fabric of human families.
Family: The Bedrock of Society
Families are the foundational units of society. Every individual in society originates from a family, and the behaviors, values, and characteristics they display in the broader community are shaped by their upbringing.
The society acts as a reflection of its families. A strong, values-driven family often contributes positively to society, while dysfunctional families can negatively influence it. Moreover, individuals can adopt harmful behaviors from others within society, bringing those traits back to their families and perpetuating cycles of negativity.
The family and society are like interconnected rivers, with behaviors and values flowing in both directions. Positive or negative influences from one family can ripple out to society and return to impact another family, creating a continuous exchange of traits and ideas.
How Families Influence Society’s Platforms
1. Schools
Schools are meeting points for individuals from diverse family backgrounds. Students interact, share ideas, and adopt behaviors from one another. While schools are meant to educate and nurture, they can also become spaces where students learn harmful habits or values, which they then carry back to their families.
2. Workplaces
Workplaces are another societal platform where individuals spend significant time. Interactions with colleagues can shape behaviors, lifestyles, and even personal beliefs. Many people form strong connections at work, sharing ideas and experiences that can either positively or negatively influence their family dynamics.
3. Social Media
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram serve as virtual societies. People from different families worldwide share their lifestyles, opinions, and values. These platforms often influence users’ perceptions and behaviors. According to statistics, a significant percentage of people emulate the actions of those they follow online, bringing those influences into their family life.
God’s Plan to Rebuild Society Through Families
From the beginning, God demonstrated His focus on families, starting creation with Adam and Eve. Despite the societal ills that have since emerged, God’s intention remains clear: to rebuild and heal society through families.
The church is God’s family and serves as a sanctuary where individuals from diverse backgrounds can learn to live according to His Word. The Bible provides a divine blueprint for life, shaping our thinking and behavior. Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he,” underscoring the importance of renewing our minds with God’s Word.
The family is the first environment where an individual’s personality is shaped, but God’s Word transcends family traditions and cultural norms. His law applies universally, offering a higher standard to unite people in love, forgiveness, and righteousness.
As a child, my grandfather taught me to fight and never back down, making me believe that physical combat was the answer to conflict. However, when I became a Christian and began studying the Bible, I learned a new way of living. Hebrews 12:14 teaches us to “pursue peace with all people.” God’s Word transformed my mindset, teaching me forgiveness and peace over hostility.
Conclusion
God’s purpose for families is to rebuild them as the cornerstone of society. While every family has unique values, traditions, and traits, God’s Word is a unifying standard that transcends differences. Through His church, God aims to heal families and shape them according to His ways.
Joining God’s family allows individuals to adopt His principles, fostering positive changes that ripple through their families and society. By embracing God’s ways, we can create a stronger, more harmonious world, starting with the family.
